THE ART OF TRANSFORMATION

Addiction Recovery is an uphill journey that requires an immense amount of support. At Rebound, we help men in our city on that journey with a whole community behind them, so we know the powerful transformation that can happen when we do the work together. To represent that hope, we asked eight Rebound graduates to share a quote about their experience and four Charlotte artists to bring those quotes to life through captivating visual part placed throughout the city. Each piece is a visual display of the transformation we strive for every day, for each person who enters our program.

The Artists

DeNeer Davis

DeNeer Davis is a proudly born and raised Charlottean. She paints murals, street art, and designs wearable, painted clothes and shoes. After suffering a devastating injury that ended her dreams of being a professional basketball player, DeNeer moved to art, a passion she has had since she was young. DeNeer is colorful and full of love, transcribing positivity and optimism into her art, something she hopes will inspire future young artists. In addition to her art, she travels to classrooms to speak to young kids about what inspires them. @neerperfection

Makayla Binter

New York native Makayla Binter is a creator and educator now based in Charlotte. Binter defies categorization: she paints, draws, collages, and shoots photography; she also creates design wear and large-scale murals and spearheads arts-focused collaborations in neighborhoods and with institutions. Binter has had an impact on Charlotte since living here—she launched the interactive Mural Panel Project at Davidson College, and is part of the #BeattiesFordStrong project. She also painted letters in the Black Lives Matter street murals in Spartanburg and Gastonia. She’s also multi-talented and super smart, graduating from Davidson College and now getting her masters in urban planning from UNCC. @mkay_15

A brand focused on “changing the game for good”. He has a strong relationship with the Charlotte Rescue Mission, partnering to create murals for the wall of Community Matters Cafe, as well as other projects designed to raise awareness about housing insecurity. @matthewclayburn

Ricky Singh

Ricky uses art to uplift communities. After a tragic shooting on Beatties Ford in 2020, he organized the #BeattiesFordRoadStrong, organizing artists of various disciplines (including the Charlotte Symphony) to create murals and unique artistic experiences throughout the West End.  A former New Yorker, Ricky now lives in Charlotte’s West End and is one of the founders of The Charlotte Lab School system. With his brightly colored work, he’s making an impact throughout Charlotte by bringing joy and happiness to areas that may not have had that visually before. @MrRickySingh
